U.S.Poverty

Generational poverty in the U.S.

Generational poverty is the United States’ most persistent
form of poverty. Fueled by chronic lack of education, financial resources, and social connections, generational poverty is
handed down from parents to children through behaviors
such as speech patterns and self-defeating attitudes.

For many born and raised in poverty, any hope of success is overwhelmed by the daily experience of failure; being without in the face of the prosperity of most Americans. It can be devastating to a child without school supplies or decent clothing to be surrounded by peers who are well equipped.

The material excesses of our society can encourage a generationally rooted mindset that one is poor because of personal deficiencies that cannot be overcome. This mental stronghold keeps people tethered to lives of want and despair.

Situational poverty in the U.S.

Every day U.S. families face shattering events that force them into poverty. The most common reasons people fall into situational poverty are job loss, divorce, and illness.
World Vision is there to serve in eight locations across the United States helping provide a safety net.
Our distribution centers supply life’s basics—clothing, shoes, hygiene products, and household supplies. This allows families to use their limited incomes on essentials like rent, and utilities.
