Supplies Means Learning for Students

We have children whose families cannot afford to buy a notebook. [They] don’t have pencils. And we have families that have clothing needs. We can help in those areas. It’s just the vast assortment of resources y’all have that helps us in a variety of areas. – Jim Till

Right on Time for Bronx School

“We’re trying to teach service learning and we’re trying to fight the national high school dropout crisis. We can’t do that without materials. Simply put, we can’t reach out to these kids if we can’t give them supplies where they can draw and learn. If we don’t have chalk boards or white boards, we can’t display anything. So what we’re trying to accomplish, we can’t unless we have materials and we’re given those by World Vision.”

Tools for Learning and Excelling

“A lot of our kids come without basic things, without crayons, without markers, that kind of stuff,” explains Lisa Martin, 48, a second grade teacher at Coalton for more than 20 years. “We ask parents to supply those when they can. And if they can’t, then we’ve got it. We’ve got spiral notebooks to use for journals and that kind of thing because of what we’re able to get [from World Vision’].”

School Supplies Help Teacher Motivate Students

“Everything just passes through my hands to my students,” Carmen says.  “I’m just the bridge that connects this wonderful organization, this World Vision to my classroom.” “It’s hard to find generous organizations that are really here to help. Once you find one, it is just a wonderful feeling.”

Removing Obstacles with School Supplies

Money for school supplies is limited. John says that after World Vision opened a satellite teacher resource center at his school, his class started to see more supplies. “It helped me to understand that there’s a lot of people in this world that really care.” Bev echoes John’s sentiments saying that having access to the school supplies “validates that somebody cares about what I'm doing.”
