Reading FUNdamentals

Learning to read is a difficult and unnatural process that requires instruction, intervention, and modeling. If we desire to live in communities where all children are successful readers, mentors, tutors, and parents need quality training to teach reading effectively. Even more essential is the need for adults to cultivate an atmosphere where reading is valued and considered enjoyable by children. The intended recipients of this three-hour training are mentors, tutors, and parents working with children between kindergarten and fifth grades. As a result of this training participants will:

  • Receive an overview of the brain structures, biological factors, and environmental factors involved in learning to read.
  • Know the five fundamental components involved in reading instruction, and know games and activities in each of the components to increase a child’s skill-level.
  • Understand the importance of reading ability as it relates to crime, poverty, employment, and the future of this country.
  • Understand the importance of positive role-modeling, learning more about their student’s interests and connecting those interests to popular, high-quality literature resources.
